Life Skills

One day, in etiquette class, I engaged fourth and fifth grade students in “dinner table conversation”. The purpose was to provide opportunities for them to develop their speaking and listening skills as well as express their thoughts, ideas and concerns.  We began talking about the importance of using correct grammar.

Then one student exclaimed in an exasperated tone, “I can’t talk no betta!”

Just then, another student chimed in, “That’s right!

Other students began to agree and disagree.

Life skills lessonsAfter awhile, I asked, “Don’t you have freedom to choose?  And, what about the choices you make everyday like choosing whether or not to do your homework?”

After further discussion, the student who once thought it was impossible to speak better chose to think a different way.
