A slam is a poetry competition that places emphasis on a participant’s writing and performance skills. There is no theme this year. Students are free to express their thoughts and feelings about things they care about. Competition Categories & Awards: • 3rd – 5th grade : 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place A team may comprise: • 2 to 5 students Prizes: • Trophies, ribbons or monetary awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams There will be one bout. Only one team per school will be allowed to perform. Select two to five students to represent your school or organization. Your team may comprise students of different grades from a specific category listed above (i.e. an elementary team may have a third, fourth and fifth grader) All participants will receive a certificate and chance to be published! Terrell Elementary― the first free public school opened for black students in 1882― once called “East Ninth Street Colored School". The Poetry Slam is one of the most popular activities sponsored by the Thank You Darlin’ Foundation.
